Masoor Dal Pulao (Dal Chawal)

Ingredients

Masoor dal, with skin (मसूर दाल साबुत) – 1 cup  

Basmati rice (बासमती चावल) – 1½ cups

Onion, large (प्याज़) – 1 no

Tomato, large (टमाटर) – 2 nos 

Garlic cloves (लहसुन) – 5-6 nos 

Ginger (अदरक) – a tiny piece

Oil (तेल) – 4-5 tbsp

Bayleaf (तेज पत्ता) – 2 nos

Peppercorn (काली मिर्च) – 12-15 nos

Cloves (लौंग) – 5-6 nos

Cumin (जीरा) – 2 tsp 

Green chilli, slit (हरि मिर्च) – 2-3 nos 

Turmeric (हल्दी) – ½ tsp 

Chilli powder (मिर्ची पाउडर) – 2 tsp 

Coriander powder (धनिया पाउडर) – 1 tbsp 

Kitchen king masala (किचन किंग मसाला) – 2 tbsp 

Salt (नमक) – to taste

Water (पानी) – 3 cups

To make Masoor Dal Pulao, start by chopping onions, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger. Heat some oil in a kadhai. Temper the oil with bay leaves, black pepper, cloves, cumin seeds, and the chopped onions, garlic, ginger, and slit green chilies.

Once the onions turn light golden brown, add the chopped tomatoes along with turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and your choice of kitchen king masala, pav bhaji masala, or sambhar masala. Stir everything quickly.

Next, add the soaked masoor dal and salt, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes. Then, add the soaked basmati rice and gently mix it in. Pour in water until it reaches the level of the rice. Lower the heat, cover the kadhai with a lid, and let it steam for 10 minutes. Your delicious Masoor Dal Pulao is now ready to serve!
